What’s a Headstone Inscription?
- A headstone inscription is when letters are engraved onto a memorial. Our design team at Sunset has lots of knowledge and experience with many different types of gravestone inscription. We can create any engraving in any type or style of font.
- We can also match any lettering style or engraving that’s on an existing memorial. This is called an added inscription. We can add a name, date, or any image or graphic you’d like. We’ll send you a sample proof, which will show you how the added lettering will look before we do the actual engraving.
- Most headstone inscriptions are done at the place where the memorial is located. When gravestone inscriptions are done outside, sometimes unpleasant weather may cause a delay.
- If you want a very large or complicated added gravestone inscription, we may need to bring the stone to our manufacturing facility. We have lots of experience doing this and we’re very careful so the memorial won’t get damaged.
Laser Etching, Engraving & Inscribing
Sunset Memorial & Stone offers state-of-the-art laser engraving with stunning results, opening up a world of possibilities for inscribing detailed images onto memorial designs.
Laser etchings allow for a wider range of customization than sandblasted engravings. In sandblasting, there are certain standards that must be adhered to in regards to minimum line weights and text sizing. In some cases, when there is an extensive amount of text, or if the reproduction of a photograph is required, we would likely recommend the art to be lasered onto the stone’s surface. The process engraves a picture or text into the granite with photographic precision, detail and accuracy.
Lasering provides the flexibility in having smaller text and/or artwork; however, lasering also has certain criteria which must be met. For instance, they are permanent and aesthetically pleasing, but will stand out best if etched on a dark-colored granite such as Premium Black or a darker Brits.
Please be aware that because of the level of detail that can be achieved and the number of additional steps involved, lasering is more costly, as opposed to sandblasting, but definitely worthwhile if you are looking to preserve those subtle qualities in an image.

Sometimes memorials can get damaged, shift, or fall. This can happen because of the weather or just over time. Some stones like marble can be affected more because they’re porous and soft. If you have a marble memorial with any fine carved detail, it may be harder to see over time.
Rarely cemetery markers get damaged by accident. If this happens, call Sunset for monument restoration. We have a very good understanding about what can happen to different types of stone and we can fix any problem. We may need to go out to the memorial and take a look at the damage. We use specialized memorial restoration techniques to make the memorial look better. Can I Clean or Restore a Monument Myself?
It’s always best to call Sunset if you need to clean, secure, or restore a memorial. We have lots of experience and our headstone restoration services will get the memorial back to looking like it should. Sometimes people decide to do the work themselves and end up causing more damage.
Did you know there are special ways to clean a memorial? If you plan to clean a memorial yourself, here are a few things you should know.
- Strong chemicals and cleaners with dyes can stain a monument.
- If the stone has a polished surface, it’s usually okay to use a glass cleaner.
- If you use a pressure washer on a polished or unpolished (sawn) surface, be very careful and don’t use the high-pressure setting because it may remove paint from the artwork.
